VA Disability Benefits for COVID-19 Coming Soon

By Douglas I. Friedman of Friedman Law Firm, P.C.

Tuesday, July 14, 2020

At today's Advisory Committee on Disability Compensation meeting, VA announced that it is working on a COVID-19 Diagnostic Code to provide for a basis to grant service connection for disabilities stemming from the novel coronavirus. We expect the interim final rule to be published in June 2021. A USB policy letter, along with updates to the VA employee manual, are expected as early as the end of June. COVID-19 (coronavirus) will be rated like West Nile virus for the active disease. Residual effects  will be rated according to the body system affected. We also expect that VA to recognize a 14-day presumptive period for COVID-19 disability service connection for those exiting the military during this time.
