How Are VA Ratings Added Together?

Why doesn't 30 +10 + 10 add up to 50 in VA math? Well, it's really confusing. We get this question a lot, but this is how it works: You start with 100%, as a whole person. Your highest rating is subtracted. If you have a 30% highest disability, that leaves 70% of your body. If you have another 10% they take 10% of the 70%, which is 7. They continue this process, going from your your lowest, until they get to your final rating. So 30 + 10 + 10 in VA math actually adds up to 43. The VA rounds this down to 40. Because of the way the ratings are calculated, it's very hard to get your ratings up to 100% if you have multiple conditions.
